Endodontic Retreatment Explained

With the appropriate care, your teeth that have had endodontic treatment will last as long as other natural teeth. Yet, a tooth that has received treatment may fail to heal or pain may continue to exist.

Sometimes, the pain may occur months or years after treatment. In these situations, Endodontic Retreatment may be needed.

Reasons for Root Canal Retreatment

Improper healing may be caused by:

  • Curved or narrow canals were not treated during the initial treatment.
  • Complicated canals went undetected during the initial treatment.
  • The crown or restoration was not placed within the appropriate amount of time following the procedure.
  • The crown or restoration did not prevent saliva from contaminating the inside of the tooth.

In some cases, new problems can influence a tooth that was successfully treated:

  • New decay can expose a root canal filling material, causing infection.
  • A cracked or loose filling or crown can expose the tooth to new infection.

The Endodontic Retreatment Process

Photo of an Endodontist performing an Endodontic RetreatmentOnce retreatment has been selected as a solution to your problem, the doctors will reopen your tooth to gain access to the root canal filling material. This restorative material will be removed to enable access to the root canal. The doctors will now clean your canals and carefully examine the inside of the problematic tooth.

Once cleaned, the doctors will fill and seal the canals and place a temporary filling in the tooth.

At this point, you will need to return to your dentist as soon as possible in order to have a new crown or restoration placed on the tooth to restore full functionality.

Patient Testimonial by Ethan R

I had an absolutely amazing experience here from start to finish. The atmosphere is welcoming, upbeat, and makes you feel comfortable the moment you walk in. The entire staff is super fun, friendly, and very personable, which made the whole visit even better. Everyone is extremely knowledgeable, professional, and genuinely cares about giving you the best experience possible. The office itself is spotless, very clean, and well organized. Wait times were minimal, which I really appreciated, and easy street parking made everything even more convenient. A special shoutout to VV — her charismatic personality truly stands out. She brings such positive energy into the office and makes everyone feel welcomed. Her professionalism and hospitality are top tier, and she goes above and beyond to make sure you’re comfortable. Joanna at the front desk was also incredible. She has such a warm and positive attitude, and she was so accommodating throughout the entire process. Her friendly and caring demeanor made check-in smooth and stress-free. And of course, Dr. Kaplan was outstanding. He is extremely knowledgeable, professional, and takes the time to walk you through everything step by step so you feel informed and confident. His fun personality and enthusiasm make the experience enjoyable while still being highly professional. Overall, this place exceeded all expectations. If you’re looking for a clean, welcoming office with an amazing team that truly cares, I highly recommend Endodontic specialty care!

Patient Testimonial by Sandra B

I like the care of Dr. Nowak. He told me what he was doing/what to expect - i.e., for the numbing shots - first he numbed - then he slowly administered the numbing medicine to deaden the tooth/root
